Gigha - Our Island Project

As 2021 dawned the world was once again in lockdown. On Gigha, it meant for an even quieter winter as all normal activities ceased and the community retreated into their own homes.

With the help of funding from the Scottish Government’s Creative Communities programme, the community was able to come together in different ways to explore what it meant to live on Gigha and be an islander and in doing so, find new ways to be creative. Over the winter and into the spring stories and experiences were gathered and re-told, a new Gaelic song was commissioned and learnt by some. Through old photographs and new ones, the past and present were re-connected. Others wrote music, the children created an animation and sea shanty, others learnt new skills and through a storyblanket project a lasting legacy of crafted stories was created.

Throughout it all a film was being created, the telling of the story of being an islander during a moment in time, which reflects the deeper connections islanders old and new have with the island and its stories.

Premiered in The Screen Machine - Our Island 2021 has enabled the people of Gigha to share stories and experiences, expertly and sensitively captured and curated by Oban based film makers Aye Glas.

"The Our Island project was delighted to commission AyeGlas as our film makers and quite honestly could not have done it without them. AyeGlas took the lead in gaining the commission as well as the trust of islanders, and the latter was crucial to success of the project. They are consummate professionals with an eye for detail and also an instinct for what will work. Their technical and professional skills aligned with their ability to generate rapport has led to further commissions for aye glas on Gigha. I am happy to speak in person if needed to provide further insight.”

OGAM Wellbeing Project

Our Gigha & Me or OGAM is a health and wellbeing project created by Maggie Wilkieson designed to help with deal with issues highlighted by COVID19 on the Island of Gigha.

“I think the film is spot on, I’m really pleased with how well it reflects what we asked of you. It’s a tricky business, transforming people’s rambled ideas into an actual audio visual product, and I think what you have produced is so true to the spirit of the project and everything it encapsulates, so a huge thank you!

Thanks once again guys, it’s been a pleasure.I hope our paths will cross again.”
